What Is the Precious Metals Calculator?

Gold, silver, platinum — precious metals are the most traditional safe-haven and store-of-value assets. The Precious Metals Calculator answers a common question: "I have HK$X to invest in gold — how many taels or ounces can I buy?" Simply enter your investment amount and pick a metal, and the calculator shows how much you can buy in ounces, grams, and Hong Kong taels, along with live reference prices and per-gram rates. Whether you're buying physical gold at a jewellery shop, opening a bank gold account, or buying a gold ETF, this calculator gives you instant conversions.

Key Concepts

Gold Pricing Units

The international gold market prices gold in troy ounces (1 oz = 31.1035 g), but Hong Kong jewellery shops use the Hong Kong tael (1 tael = 37.429 g). So when you see news quoting "gold at US$2,300/oz", converting to HK taels works out to: US$2,300 × 7.8 ÷ 31.1035 × 37.429 ≈ HK$21,500/tael. Our calculator handles all these conversions automatically.

Different Ways to Invest in Gold

Hong Kong offers several ways to invest in gold: ① Physical gold (coins, bars, nuggets) — no counterparty risk but requires storage and insurance; ② Bank gold accounts — convenient but usually have minimums and fees; ③ Gold ETFs (e.g. 2840.HK SPDR Gold ETF) — the most convenient, trades like a stock; ④ Gold futures — high leverage, high risk, not suitable for most retail investors.

Gold's Role in Your Portfolio

Gold generates no interest or dividends, so it shouldn't dominate your portfolio. General guidelines: conservative investors may allocate 5–10% to gold as a hedge; aggressive investors may need only 0–5%. Gold's greatest value is preserving wealth during stock market crashes or high inflation — not long-term capital appreciation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Physical gold vs bank gold account?
Physical gold: you hold the asset with no counterparty risk, but need to consider storage security and buy/sell spreads (typically 2–5%). Bank gold accounts: convenient trading with no storage hassle, but watch out for fees and minimums. Gold ETFs: the most convenient, highest liquidity, low management fees (~0.3% p.a.) — the best option for most retail investors.
Is now a good time to buy gold?
Gold prices are influenced by the USD, interest rates, inflation, and geopolitics. No one can predict short-term movements accurately. Rather than timing the market, treat gold as part of your long-term asset allocation. If you're concerned about equity risk or high inflation, consider allocating 5–10% to gold.
