CNY/RMB Time Deposits vs HKD Time Deposits:
Higher Rates, But FX Swings Can Wipe It All Out
Gary Chung(FinKit Editor-in-Chief) · Published:July 31, 2026
In 2026, HKD time deposit rates generally sit at 2–3%, while CNY/RMB time deposit rates can reach 3–4%. On the surface that's 1–2 percentage points more per year, but exchange rate swings can completely swallow the interest — in 2025 alone, the RMB fell over 3% against HKD in a single quarter. Earn an extra HK$1,500 in interest, lose HK$3,000 on the FX side. This article uses real bank rates and historical FX data to unpack the true returns of CNY/RMB time deposits.
July 2026: CNY/RMB vs HKD Time Deposit Rates Compared
Below are the CNY/RMB time deposit rates at major Hong Kong banks as of late July 2026 (based on a HK$100,000 equivalent). CNY/RMB deposit rates are generally 1–2 percentage points higher than HKD, but the exchange spread and FX risk are the decisive variables.
| Bank | 🇭🇰 HKD 6-Month | 🇨🇳 CNY 6-Month | Spread | CNY Min. Deposit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BOCHK | 2.40% | 2.80% | +0.40% | ¥10,000 |
| HSBC | 2.20% | 3.00% | +0.80% | ¥10,000 |
| Hang Seng | 2.20% | 3.10% | +0.90% | ¥10,000 |
| Standard Chartered | 2.40% | 2.50% | +0.10% | ¥10,000 |
| BEA | 2.70% | 3.50% | +0.80% | ¥10,000 |
| ICBC Asia | 2.80% | 3.60% | +0.80% | ¥10,000 |

CNY/RMB time deposit rates are indeed attractive — averaging 0.5–1 percentage point above HKD. But this is only the "nominal rate", before accounting for conversion costs and FX swings. Below we calculate the actual return after FX risk, using real numbers.
The FX Trap:
Interest Earned, FX Losses Twice as Large
The real risk of CNY/RMB time deposits isn't the bank going under — it's the exchange rate. Here's a real-world scenario:
Simulated Case: HK$100,000 in a 6-Month CNY/RMB Time Deposit
• January 2026: CNY/HKD = 1.16, HK$100,000 converted → ¥86,207
• 6-month deposit at 3.5%, maturity amount = ¥86,207 × (1 + 3.5% × 6/12) = ¥87,716
• If exchange rate unchanged: ¥87,716 × 1.16 = HK$101,750 (gain of HK$1,750)
⚠️ But if RMB depreciates 3% (CNY/HKD falls from 1.16 to 1.125):
• ¥87,716 × 1.125 = HK$98,681 (loss of HK$1,319)
Net return: -1.32% (HKD terms)
Half a year's interest of ¥1,509, wiped out and then some by a mere 3% FX move costing HK$3,069. The interest you earn, the FX loss pays back with interest.
Five-Year Lookback:
CNY/HKD Swung Between 1.09 and 1.25
The RMB/HKD exchange rate hasn't moved in one direction over the past five years — it has repeatedly swung in wide ranges:
| Period | CNY/HKD | Change vs Today | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early 2021 | 1.25 | +7.8% | Post-COVID RMB strength, multi-year high vs HKD |
| Mid 2022 | 1.17 | +0.9% | US rate hikes, RMB softened |
| Late 2023 | 1.09 | -6.0% | Mainland economic slowdown, RMB under pressure |
| Mid 2024 | 1.12 | -3.4% | PBOC continued rate cuts |
| July 2026 | 1.16 | — | US-China rate differential environment |
Data source: XE.com CNY/HKD historical rates. January 2021 to July 2026. Five-year high: 1.25 (early 2021); five-year low: 1.09 (late 2023). Total swing: 14.7%. The safety margin on CNY/RMB time deposits is only about 1–2% — a modest FX move can fully erase the interest earned.
The key is not that the RMB "must depreciate", but that you simply cannot predict what the exchange rate will be at maturity. An investor who bought in 2021 and sold in late 2023 suffered a 6% FX loss. One who bought in late 2023 and sold in mid-2026 enjoyed FX gains. The problem: no one knows which camp they'll fall into.
When Do CNY/RMB Time Deposits Make Sense? Three Reasonable Scenarios
Scenario 1: You already earn or spend in CNY/RMB
If you run a Mainland business, receive RMB salary, or frequently travel north for spending, you naturally need CNY/RMB. In this case, CNY/RMB time deposits are a sensible choice — no conversion needed, no FX risk. The interest earned is genuine additional income.
Scenario 2: Short-term rate arbitrage (3–6 months)
If you believe the RMB will stay stable in the short term, short-term (3–6 month) CNY/RMB time deposits can be considered. Short-term FX swings are relatively contained, and the CNY/RMB rate advantage is clear. But note: if the exchange rate drops sharply (e.g. an unexpected PBOC rate cut), short-term deposits can still suffer FX losses.
Scenario 3: Currency diversification
If you already hold significant HKD and USD assets, allocating a small portion to CNY/RMB (e.g. 5–10% of total assets) can diversify currency risk. The RMB has a relatively low correlation with the USD and may hedge some risk during USD weakness. But this is an asset allocation consideration, not purely a rate play.
When Should You Avoid CNY/RMB Time Deposits?
⚠️ You only have HKD and need to convert first
This is the most common trap. Bank exchange spreads (bid-ask) are typically 0.5–1%, meaning you lose 0.5–1% the moment you convert. Take HSBC's CNY/RMB deposit at 3% — after conversion costs, your actual first-year return is only 2–2.5%, already comparable to HKD time deposits. And that's before the second conversion cost when you switch back to HKD at maturity.
⚠️ You need the money in HKD soon
If you'll need HKD within 6–12 months (e.g. for tax payments, property purchase, renovations), CNY/RMB time deposits are unsuitable. Short-term FX moves can be large — in August 2025, the RMB fell over 2% in a single month. If your maturity date coincides with an FX low, you'll be forced to convert back at a loss.
⚠️ You expect continued RMB depreciation
In 2026, the market broadly expects the PBOC to keep cutting rates (the Mainland economy needs stimulus), while the Fed is cutting more slowly. With the US-China rate differential widening, the RMB still faces depreciation pressure. If you believe this trend will persist, the rate advantage of CNY/RMB time deposits may not be enough to cover FX losses.
DIY Return Calculation:
How Much Interest Does a CNY/RMB Deposit Need to Be Worthwhile?
Use the formula below to judge for yourself whether a CNY/RMB time deposit is worth considering:
Practical Formula
Actual CNY/RMB Deposit Return (HKD terms) = Deposit Rate − Conversion Cost − Expected FX Change
Conversion Cost ≈ 0.5–1% (bid-ask spread, round trip)
Expected FX Change = depends on your view of RMB direction
Worked Example (6-Month Deposit)
• CNY/RMB deposit rate: 3.5% p.a. → 6 months = 1.75%
• Conversion cost: -0.8% (round-trip bid-ask spread)
• If FX unchanged: actual return = 1.75% − 0.8% = 0.95% (6 months)
• If RMB depreciates 1%: actual return = 1.75% − 0.8% − 1% = -0.05% (loss)
• If RMB depreciates 2%: actual return = 1.75% − 0.8% − 2% = -1.05% (significant loss)
The safety margin is only about 1%. With a five-year swing of 14.7%, a depreciation exceeding 1% is hardly rare.
Not Keen on CNY/RMB Deposits? Here Are the Alternatives
If you want higher rates without CNY/RMB FX risk, here are alternative options:
| Option | Approx. Rate | FX Risk | Suitable For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇭🇰 HKD Time Deposit | 2.0–3.3% | None | Everyone |
| 🇺🇸 USD Time Deposit | 3.0–4.0% | Very low (pegged) | Those comfortable with minor fluctuations |
| 🇭🇰 Green Bond / Silver Bond | 3.5–4.0% | None | Long-term holders |
| 📊 Money Market Funds | 3.0–3.5% | None | Those needing liquidity |
USD time deposit rates are 0.5–1 percentage point above HKD, and since the HKD is pegged to the USD (7.75–7.85), FX risk is minimal. For larger sums, this is a more reliable "upgrade" pick than CNY/RMB time deposits.

CNY/RMB time deposit rates are indeed attractive, but FX risk is real and significant. The five-year swing is 14.7%, and the six-month safety margin is only about 1% — a modest FX move can fully erase the interest earned.
If you already hold RMB income, time deposits are a sensible choice. But if you need to convert from HKD first, conversion costs plus FX uncertainty make returns highly unpredictable.
Rather than chasing the higher rates on CNY/RMB deposits, consider USD time deposits (pegged, minimal FX risk) or holding Silver Bonds/Green Bonds long-term (similar rates, zero FX risk). Steady returns beat the regret of earning interest only to lose it on the exchange rate.
⚡ Key Risks Recap
- • CNY/RMB time deposits carry FX risk — depreciation can fully offset interest earned
- • Bank exchange spread costs ~0.5–1% round trip, directly eating into actual returns
- • Five-year swing reached 14.7%; short-term moves exceeding 2% are not uncommon
- • In 2026, the widening US-China rate differential continues to pressure the RMB
- • Funds needed in HKD in the near term should not be converted to CNY/RMB for time deposits
