Forex Tips

Foreign Transaction Fees

Most Hong Kong credit cards charge 1.95%–2.5% foreign transaction fees. For example, a HK$10,000 purchase in Japan adds HK$200–$250 in fees. Use cards with no foreign transaction fees (e.g. Standard Chartered Simply Cash, some UnionPay cards).

Bank vs Money Changer Rates

Bank telegraphic transfer (TT) rates are usually the best but charge fees. Money changers offer slightly worse rates but no fees. For small amounts (<HK$10,000), use money changers. For large remittances, bank TT is cheaper.

Limit Orders

Some online banks support limit orders — set a target exchange rate and it converts automatically when reached. No need to watch the market constantly. HSBC, BEA and others offer this feature.

Travel Cash Tips

Airport exchange counters offer the worst rates (poor rate + fees). Exchange a small amount at a Hong Kong money changer before departure, then use local ATMs (UnionPay network = no fees) and credit cards at your destination.

Key Concepts

Bank Rates vs Reference Rates

The rates shown here are reference (mid-market) rates. Banks and money changers apply a spread — their buy rate is lower and sell rate is higher than the mid-market rate. Spreads typically range from 0.5–2%, depending on the currency and transaction size. Always compare quotes from several banks or money changers before making a large exchange.

HKD Linked Exchange Rate System

Since 1983, the Hong Kong dollar has been pegged to the US dollar, with the HKMA committed to keeping the exchange rate within the 7.75–7.85 band. This system keeps the HKD relatively stable but also means Hong Kong's interest rate policy largely follows the US Federal Reserve. When the US raises rates, Hong Kong banks typically follow.

Travel Money Tips

Rather than exchanging money at the airport or your hotel (usually the worst rates), consider: ① Using a credit card with high overseas spending rebates (2–4% cashback can offset the exchange spread); ② Exchanging a small amount of cash at a Hong Kong bank beforehand; ③ Using local ATMs at your destination (usually better rates, but check for fees).

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to exchange currency?
Exchange rates are extremely difficult to predict — trying to time the market is usually futile. If you have regular foreign currency needs (e.g. monthly remittances to mainland China), consider using a DCA (dollar-cost averaging) approach to smooth out the exchange rate over time. For large one-off exchanges (e.g. buying overseas property), set a target rate and exchange when it's reached.
How does the RMB exchange rate work?
The renminbi is a managed currency. The People's Bank of China sets a daily 'central parity rate', and the market rate can fluctuate within a ±2% band. There are two RMB markets: CNY (onshore) and CNH (offshore), and their rates can differ. Hong Kong uses the CNH offshore renminbi rate.
