Bank Welcome Offers 2026: HSBC, DBS, Citigold Compared

Gary Chung(FinKit Editor-in-Chief) · PublishedSeptember 10, 2026

In September 2026, three Hong Kong banks are running welcome offers on their wealth-management accounts at the same time: HSBC Premier, DBS Treasures and Citigold (Citibank). Rewards range from HK$53,800 to HK$70,000, but the asset thresholds, maintaining requirements and payout mechanics all differ. Below is a line-by-line comparison based on each bank's official published terms.

At a Glance: Three Banks Compared

"Up to" amounts correspond to each bank's highest tier, usually requiring designated transactions or a maintained balance to receive the full reward.

1. HSBC Premier: Welcome Rewards Worth Over HK$55,000

The reward

From 1 September to 31 December 2026, customers who upgrade to HSBC Premier and complete designated transactions can receive welcome rewards worth over HK$55,000.

Asset threshold

Maintain a Total Relationship Balance of HK$1,000,000 or above. Applicants must meet one of the specified requirements, including the balance threshold or belonging to a designated customer category.

Extras

A six-month waiver of the low-balance service fee. If the Total Relationship Balance falls below the specified amount, the same six-month waiver may still apply.

2. DBS Treasures: Up to HK$53,800 Cash Reward

The reward

New DBS Treasures customers can enjoy up to HK$53,800 in cash rewards. Rewards are split across several categories: account opening, wealth management, investment product balance, insurance product balance and securities transfer-in.

Asset threshold

Deposit HK$1,000,000 or more of new funds and maintain a monthly total relationship balance of HK$1,000,000 or above (or foreign currency equivalent).

Extra reward

Referring friends who open an account can earn a referral reward of up to HK$1,500.

3. Citigold (Citibank): Up to HK$70,000 Cash Rebate

The reward

Upgrading to Citigold offers up to HK$70,000 in cash rebate. A separate referral reward is available for introducing friends who upgrade to Citigold.

Asset threshold

Maintain a minimum deposit balance of HK$1,500,000 each month to use Citigold services.

Other arrangement

Citigold customers can open a Citi NextGen account for children aged 11 to 17, with a parental protection mode and daily spending or withdrawal limits set in the mobile app.

Some online sources quote HK$98,500 as the Citigold welcome amount, which does not match the HK$70,000 currently published on the bank's official website; this table follows the official site. Source: Citibank Hong Kong official website.

Four Things to Check Before Applying

1. Rewards are usually paid in stages

Rewards typically require designated transactions and a maintained balance over a period before release — not on the day the account opens. Banks often set tiers with different requirements and amounts.

2. The threshold is a continuing requirement

Banks generally require the relationship balance or deposit level to be maintained every month. Meeting it once at account opening is not enough, so plan your cash flow accordingly.

3. A low balance may trigger a service fee

Wealth accounts commonly charge a monthly low-balance service fee if the balance falls below the specified level. Some welcome programmes waive it for the first few months — check what happens after the waiver ends.

4. "Up to" means the top tier

The advertised "up to" figure is the highest tier, usually tied to the largest asset requirement or the most designated transactions. The actual amount depends on the terms at opening and the tier you qualify for.

Appendix: Lower-Threshold Option (Virtual Bank)

If your assets fall below the wealth-account thresholds above, virtual banks offer welcome offers at lower entry points. WeLab Bank, for example, offers from now until 30 September 2026: open an account with the code【WNTB26】, set up a core and investment account, deposit HK$100,000 or more of new funds within seven days and maintain the balance for 21 days, to receive an HK$550 travel cash voucher plus up to HK$1,000 cash rebate. FAQ

Are welcome rewards paid in cash?

It depends on the bank. Most come as cash rewards or cash rebates, while some are provided as gift cards, travel vouchers or credit card reward points. The form is defined by the official terms at account opening.

Can I claim welcome offers from several banks at once?

Each bank's offer generally applies only to that bank's new customers, using its own definition of "new" (for example, not holding a designated account in a recent period). The programmes operate independently — you arrange the funding for each yourself.

Is the reward taxable?

A bank account welcome reward is generally not employment income. Tax treatment can vary in individual cases, so seek professional tax advice if in doubt.

Can I compare this with time deposit rates?

Treat them as two separate parts: the welcome reward is a one-off, while interest is calculated from the deposit amount and term. To compare the latest HKD time deposit rates, use FinKit's Fixed Deposit Comparison; bank rate tables and other reference data are in Resources.
