Insurance Needs Calculator

Estimate your life, critical illness, and medical insurance coverage needs based on your age, income, and family situation.

⚠️ This calculator estimates pure protection insurance (Term Life, Critical Illness, Medical) — no savings or investment component. Pure protection premiums are far lower than savings-linked policies (up to 10x cheaper). We recommend: "Buy term, invest the rest."

💡 Tip

Buy insurance while you're young — premiums are much cheaper! Even if you feel you don't need it now, locking in low rates early is a smart move.

Insurance Protection Essentials

Life vs Critical Illness

Life insurance pays out to your family after you pass away, protecting their livelihood. Critical illness insurance provides a lump-sum payout upon diagnosis of a serious illness, to cover medical costs and living expenses while you're unable to work. They serve different purposes — ideally, you should have both.

Buy Early, Pay Less

Insurance premiums are directly linked to age — buying at 30 vs 40 can mean a 30–50% difference in premiums. Locking in low rates while you're young and healthy is one of the smartest financial moves you can make.

Company Insurance May Not Be Enough

Many employees rely solely on their company's group medical plan, but coverage ends the moment you leave the job, and the coverage is often limited. Consider getting your own basic hospitalisation plan as a foundation — treat your employer's plan as a bonus.

Insurance ≠ Investment

Endowment policies and investment-linked insurance typically come with high fees and low returns. We recommend "Buy term, invest the rest" — get pure term life insurance for protection, and invest separately through ETFs or funds at much lower cost.

FAQ

How much life insurance do I really need?

A common rule of thumb is 10–15× your annual income, plus any outstanding debts. If you have dependents (children, non-working spouse), aim for the higher end. The goal is to ensure your family can maintain their lifestyle and cover major expenses (mortgage, education) if you're no longer around.

Term life vs whole life — which is better?

Term life is pure protection: you pay for coverage over a set period (e.g. 20 years). It's significantly cheaper. Whole life combines insurance with a savings component and costs much more. For most people, term life + investing the difference in low-cost index funds results in better financial outcomes. Buy term for protection, invest for wealth.
