Credit Card Repayment Essentials
Min Pay = The Most Expensive Loan
Paying only the minimum means interest accrues from the transaction date (no interest-free period) at rates up to 35%+. A few tens of thousands in card debt can take decades to clear.
Balance Transfer (BT)
Transfer high-interest card debt to a low-interest loan (2%–8% APR) with fixed monthly repayments — you can save over 80% on interest. Most banks offer BT programmes.
Major Banks' Minimum Payment %
HSBC/Hang Seng: 1% or HK$50 (whichever is higher); Standard Chartered: 1% or HK$50; BOC: 1% or HK$50; BEA: 3% or HK$50. Check your statement: Minimum Payment ÷ Balance × 100 = your card's actual %.
3-Step Self-Rescue
1) Stop using that card 2) Apply for a BT to transfer the balance 3) Set up a fixed monthly repayment plan. Never use one card to pay another.
