How to Pick CBBCs:
Balancing Leverage vs Call Distance

When buying a CBBC (Callable Bull/Bear Contract), the first decision is not which issuer to choose — it is how far the call price sits from the current price. Two bull contracts on the same direction can differ in leverage by more than double, and their chance of being called away is completely different. Start with two numbers:

Every CBBC trade-off ultimately comes down to two numbers.
① Leverage
How much the CBBC price moves for every 1% move in the underlying asset. Leverage = spot price ÷ (CBBC price × entitlement ratio). Higher leverage means a bigger amplification of both gains and losses.
② Call distance (buffer)
The gap between the spot price and the call price. For bull contracts the call price sits below spot; for bear contracts it sits above spot. The wider the gap, the further the underlying must move before a mandatory call is triggered.
The two numbers pull in opposite directions. For the same underlying asset, the closer the call price to spot, the cheaper the CBBC and the higher the leverage — but the greater the risk of being called. The further the call price, the more room the position has to breathe, yet leverage is diluted and returns are amplified less. There is also a third, often overlooked factor — the funding cost — which represents the issuer's hedging and financing costs. It erodes the CBBC price daily over time, and for near-to-money contracts it makes up a particularly large share of the price.

In practice, CBBCs are roughly grouped by call distance into "near-to-money" and "far" contracts:
Near-to-money CBBCs (short call distance)
High leverage and a low entry price, with prices highly sensitive to moves in the underlying. But the buffer is small — a brief swing can already trigger a call — and the funding cost is large relative to the price, so time decay bites harder. Suited to investors with a clear short-term view who can tolerate high volatility.
Far CBBCs (long call distance)
A wider buffer that allows the underlying to swing before a call is triggered, so the position is less stressful to hold. But leverage is lower, the entry cost is higher and the total hedging cost is larger. Suited to investors with a clear direction who expect choppy trading or plan to hold longer.
There is no universally "right" distance — only the distance that fits your plan and risk tolerance. Decide your holding period and how much volatility you can absorb first, then pick the product. Don't chase headline leverage numbers.
Worked example:
the same direction at three distances
Assume the Hang Seng Index is at 20,000 and you are bullish. Three bull contracts are issued with a 10,000:1 entitlement ratio, differing only in call and exercise price distance (prices approximated by intrinsic value, excluding funding cost):
Bull A: near-to-money
Call 19,500 (500 points away), exercise 19,000
Intrinsic value = (20,000 − 19,000) ÷ 10,000 = HK$0.10
Leverage = 20,000 ÷ (0.10 × 10,000) = 20x
A 500-point drop triggers a call.
Bull B: mid distance
Call 19,000 (1,000 points away), exercise 18,500
Intrinsic value = (20,000 − 18,500) ÷ 10,000 = HK$0.15
Leverage = 20,000 ÷ (0.15 × 10,000) = ≈13x
A 1,000-point drop triggers a call.
Bull C: far
Call 18,000 (2,000 points away), exercise 17,500
Intrinsic value = (20,000 − 17,500) ÷ 10,000 = HK$0.25
Leverage = 20,000 ÷ (0.25 × 10,000) = 8x
A 2,000-point drop triggers a call.
Same direction, same entitlement ratio — yet leverage ranges from 8x to 20x simply because of call distance. If the index rises 1% (200 points), the returns on the three contracts are roughly +20%, +13% and +8%. The headline gain of high leverage is attractive, but remember the other side: once the call price is touched, the CBBC is called away and trading stops immediately, and the investor loses most or all of the principal — with no compensation for having been "right on direction". Leverage magnifies losses just as directly as it magnifies gains.
A three-step way to pick:
direction, distance, then comparison
Step 1: Decide direction before leverage
First judge the short-term direction of the underlying (bull or bear). Without a clear direction, any leverage is pure risk — never let a high-leverage product bend your directional view.
Step 2: Pick call distance by your tolerance
Ask yourself: "How many points of swing can I accept before being forced out?" That number is your call distance. The call price is your passive exit point — a distance that is too short hands the stop-loss decision to the market.
Step 3: Compare products at the same distance
Among contracts with similar distances, compare leverage, funding cost, street volume and issuer. Street volume data can help you avoid heavy zones where cascading calls are more likely.

You execute a stop-loss on a stock yourself; a CBBC call is passive — once the price is touched, the contract is called away and a later rebound is none of your business. The two are fundamentally different.

Funding cost erodes the price daily, especially for near-to-money contracts. Over a multi-day hold, the difference can offset a meaningful part of potential returns.
🚫 "A far contract is safe enough to set and forget"
Far only means harder to call, not impossible to lose money: a wrong directional call still pushes the price down, and leverage means the loss can still be substantial.
🚫 "The further, the better value"
Far contracts have lower leverage, higher entry costs and larger total funding costs. An overly wide distance can wipe out the point of CBBCs entirely — you might as well hold the underlying.
